Nairobi City Excursions

Day 1: Nairobi National Park, Animal Orphanage & Nairobi Safari Walk

Meet at the hotel at 7.30am for transfer to Nairobi National park for a morning game drive.

8.00am – 12.00pm: Nairobi National Park Game Drive

This is the only park located within a city and has all 4 of the big five animal species. Some types of birds found in this park include the saddle billed stork, martial eagle, crowned plover, hadada ibis, white faced whistling ducks, the starling, Egyptian geese and the Hartlaub’s bustard among others.

Nairobi National Park: This is a unique ecosystem by being the only protected area in the world close to a capital city. The park is located only 7 km from Nairobi city centre and comprises of different vegetation types. Open grass plains with scattered acacia bush are predominant. The western side has a highland dry forest and a permanent river with a riverine forest. To the south are the Athi-Kapiti Plains and Kitengela migration corridor which are important wildlife dispersal areas during the rainy season. Man-made dams within the park have added a further habitat, favorable to certain species of birds and other aquatic biome. Major wildlife found in the park includes the black rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, buffaloes, Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, elands and diverse birdlife. Other attractions include the Ivory burning site Monument, Nairobi Safari Walk, the Orphanage and the walking trails at hippo pools. The park is also growing in popularity in hosting corporate events such as bush dinners, team building, Video and film production and special events such as weddings. Within the vicinity is also a three-star restaurant where patrons relax for meals while overlooking the park.

12.30pm – 2.00pm: Lunch

After the game drive, you will have lunch at the Rangers Restaurant which is located right outside the National Park gate.

2.00pm – 3.00pm: Animal Orphanage

After lunch, visit the nearby Nairobi Animal Orphanage where you will see caged animals and birds at close range. This is also a perfect opportunity to see the cheetah, which is rarely seen in the national park.

DSC09346This is the oldest animal orphanage in Kenya established as a refuge and rehabilitation centre for wild animals found abandoned or injured throughout Kenya. Animals received at the facility, undergo a thorough medical examination, followed by treatment where that is called for, before entering into an appropriate feeding and rehabilitation program. Major attractions in this small park include bonding with orphaned animals, up-close view of animals, playing with the cheetah and adopting animals. Some wildlife that can be seen on display include the lion, cheetah, hyena, jackal, serval cat, sokoke cat, warthog, ostrich, leopard, monkeys, baboons, buffalo and various bird species.
3.00pm – 4.00pm: Nairobi Safari Walk

Afterwards you will visit the Nairobi Safari Walk which is also located in the Nairobi National Park.

The Nairobi Safari Walk is the ultimate eye opener to Kenya’s Parks and Reserves. It offers you an opportunity to learn what you expect to see across the country. Introductory talks on Kenya’s parks and reserves, can be arranged for you by the naturalists available on site. You will have a taste of Kenya’s rich Animal collection including the rare bongo, white rhino, albino zebra, a collection of cats, antelopes and primates. The park is also home to a collection of about 150 species of local trees. Get to learn their varied traditional uses too. Some unique plants and animals that are locally extinct or threatened are displayed so that the public can learn the dangers facing conservation today.
After the tour, you will exit from the park and be driven back to your hotel for rest and overnight.
